Halothane


Mechanism of action:

Halothane is a halogenated alkane derivative. Halothane may enhance the inhibitory effects of GABA_A receptors and glycine receptors, while also modulating multiple ion channels and neurotransmission pathways. It increases neuronal chloride channel activity, promotes chloride influx, causes membrane hyperpolarization, reduces neuronal firing capacity, and thereby produces sedation and loss of consciousness.
