Benzonatate

Mechanism of action:

Benzonatate can bind to voltage-gated Na⁺ channels on neuronal cell membranes, keeping the sodium channels in an inactivated state and preventing Na⁺ influx that would otherwise produce depolarization. As a result, action potentials cannot be generated, sensory nerves become anesthetized, and the sensitivity of the cough reflex is reduced.
