Canagliflozin


Mechanism of action:

Canagliflozin is a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor. Under normal conditions, the kidneys reabsorb nearly all filtered glucose. Approximately 90% of this glucose is reabsorbed through SGLT2 in proximal tubular epithelial cells, while the remaining 10% is reabsorbed by SGLT1. Canagliflozin inhibits the function of SGLT2, preventing glucose reabsorption and causing most of the glucose to be excreted in the urine.
