Chenodiol

Mechanism of action:
Chenodiol, also known as chenodeoxycholic acid, is itself one of the body's natural bile acids. Exogenous chenodeoxycholic acid alters bile acid composition by increasing the proportion of chenodeoxycholic acid and decreasing the proportion of cholic acid in bile. This lowers the saturation of cholesterol in bile, allowing pre-existing cholesterol crystals to gradually dissolve. In addition, chenodeoxycholic acid can suppress the activity of cholesterol 7α-hydroxylase in the liver through a negative feedback mechanism, thereby reducing endogenous bile acid synthesis.
