Cisapride

Mechanism of action:
Cisapride is a prokinetic agent of the gastrointestinal tract and is a 5-HT₄ receptor agonist that promotes upper gastrointestinal motility. In the enteric nervous system, cisapride acts on neuronal 5-HT₄ receptors and stimulates nerve terminals to release acetylcholine. This enhances the stimulatory effect of acetylcholine on smooth muscle, increases lower esophageal sphincter tone, and promotes motility in the stomach, duodenum, and colon.
