Cocaine

Mechanism of action:
Cocaine is a central nervous system stimulant. Cocaine enhances neurotransmitter activity by inhibiting neurotransmitter reuptake, thereby increasing central stimulation and strengthening reward pathways. It blocks the dopamine transporter, preventing dopamine reuptake and producing euphoria while reinforcing the reward circuit. It blocks the norepinephrine transporter, preventing norepinephrine reuptake and increasing sympathetic activity. It also blocks the serotonin transporter, preventing serotonin reuptake and influencing mood and behavior. Cocaine is highly addictive. In addition, cocaine inhibits voltage-gated sodium channels, preventing neurons from generating and conducting action potentials. This suppresses sensory nerve activity and produces a local anesthetic effect.
