Entacapone

Mechanism of action:

Entacapone is a catechol-O-methyltransferase inhibitor and is commonly used as an adjunct to levodopa. Peripheral catechol-O-methyltransferase breaks down levodopa, reducing the amount that can enter the central nervous system. Entacapone inhibits peripheral catechol-O-methyltransferase activity, allowing more levodopa to reach the central nervous system and be converted into dopamine, thereby increasing the proportion of centrally available levodopa and modulating dopamine-related signaling.
