Ergonovine

Mechanism of action:

Ergonovine is a uterotonic and vasoconstrictor that belongs to the ergot alkaloid derivatives. Ergonovine acts as an agonist at the serotonin 5-HT₂A receptor, promoting smooth muscle contraction. In the uterus, it can induce sustained uterine contraction and alter uterine vascular compression and blood flow dynamics. Ergonovine can also stimulate the α₁-adrenoreceptor, causing constriction of peripheral and coronary blood vessels.
