Ertapenem

Mechanism of action:

Ertapenem is a β-lactam antibiotic of the carbapenem class. The β-lactam ring of ertapenem binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) in bacteria and inhibits their transpeptidase activity, preventing cross-linking of peptidoglycan chains. As a result, the bacterial cell wall becomes structurally weak, and the bacterium eventually ruptures and dies due to osmotic pressure.
