Etidronate

Mechanism of action:

Etidronate is a bisphosphonate derivative and belongs to the first-generation, non-nitrogen-containing bisphosphonates. Etidronate has a high affinity for hydroxyapatite and preferentially deposits on surfaces undergoing active bone resorption. Within osteoclasts, etidronate is metabolized into non-hydrolyzable ATP analogues, which interfere with cellular energy metabolism and lead to inhibition of osteoclast function and apoptosis.
