Etonogestrel

Etonogestrel is a synthetic progestin and belongs to the third generation of progestational agents. Etonogestrel provides a stable progestational signal and exerts negative feedback on the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (H-P-O) axis, suppressing the luteinizing hormone (LH) surge and thereby inhibiting ovulation. It also thickens cervical mucus, reducing the ability of sperm to enter the uterine cavity, and maintains the endometrium in a state that is unfavorable for implantation, further lowering the likelihood of fertilization and implantation.
