Imipenem
Mechanism of action:
Imipenem is a β-lactam antibiotic belonging to the carbapenem class. The β-lactam ring of imipenem binds to bacterial penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) and inhibits their transpeptidase activity, preventing peptidoglycan chains from cross-linking. As a result, the bacterial cell wall becomes structurally weak, and the bacteria eventually rupture and die due to osmotic pressure.
