Iodoquinol

Mechanism of action:
Iodoquinol is a halogenated hydroxyquinoline derivative. It has the ability to chelate metal ions such as Fe²⁺ and Zn²⁺, which serve as cofactors for multiple enzymatic systems in amoebae. Chelation of these metal ions inhibits key metabolic reactions and enzyme activities in the protozoa. Iodoquinol acts mainly within the intestinal lumen and is effective against both trophozoites and cysts of Entamoeba histolytica, but has limited activity against amoebae that have already invaded tissues.
