Lubiprostone

Mechanism of action:

Lubiprostone is a prostaglandin E1 derivative. Lubiprostone promotes chloride secretion by epithelial cells in the small and large intestine, allowing chloride ions to enter the intestinal lumen. Sodium and water then passively follow into the lumen, increasing the fluid content of intestinal contents and softening the stool.
