Meclizine


Mechanism of action:

Meclizine is a first-generation H1 receptor antagonist with anticholinergic properties. Meclizine blocks H1 receptors in the central nervous system, particularly in the vestibular nuclei and the medullary vomiting center, thereby reducing abnormal input from the vestibular organs of the inner ear and decreasing vestibular-driven stimulation of the vomiting center. Meclizine can also mildly antagonize muscarinic acetylcholine receptors, further suppressing vestibular input to the vomiting center and enhancing its inhibitory effect on motion sickness and vomiting reflexes.
