Mitomycin C


Mechanism of action:

Mitomycin C is an alkylating agent structurally derived from Streptomyces caespitosus. Mitomycin C is a prodrug that must be activated by intracellular reductases, such as cytochrome P450 reductase and DT-diaphorase. Once reduced, mitomycin C forms highly reactive intermediates that create alkylating bonds with DNA, causing DNA cross-linking, especially between DNA strands. This inhibits DNA replication and transcription and ultimately leads to cell death.
