Omeprazole


Mechanism of action:

Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor and a racemic mixture of R and S isomers. In the stomach, omeprazole is activated into a sulfenamide form, which then forms covalent bonds with the H+/K+-ATPase proton pump in gastric parietal cells, irreversibly inhibiting its activity and blocking the secretion of hydrogen ions into the gastric lumen.
