Probenecid

Mechanism of action:

Probenecid is a uricosuric agent. Probenecid mainly inhibits urate transporter 1 (URAT1) and organic anion transporter 4 (OAT4) in proximal renal tubular epithelial cells, reducing the reabsorption of uric acid from the tubular lumen back into the blood. This increases uric acid excretion and lowers serum uric acid levels.
