Extreme Climate Shaped a Dinosaur Konservat-Lagerstätte

Exceptional fossil deposits (Konservat-Lagerstätten) preserve a remarkable abundance of exquisitely preserved fossils, often retaining soft tissues, skin, feathers, and other structures that rarely fossilize. As a result, they have long served as crucial evidence for reconstructing ancient ecosystems and biological evolution.

However, such fossil deposits are extremely rare, particularly in humid tropical regions. Because high temperatures, abundant moisture, and intense biological activity rapidly decompose organic remains, complete fossil preservation is generally difficult. Consequently, scientists still lack a comprehensive understanding of the environmental conditions and events responsible for the formation of these exceptional fossil deposits.

Modern tropical coastal environments are strongly influenced by monsoons and tropical cyclones. These extreme weather events can rapidly deliver large amounts of freshwater, sediment, and nutrients, drastically altering coastal landscapes and ecosystems. However, in the geological record, such short-lived events are usually averaged out by long-term sedimentation. As a result, evidence for monsoon intensity and seasonality is generally derived from geological records representing long-term accumulation, whereas direct records of individual typhoons, floods, or other extreme events are rarely preserved.
