Morphological description

In the mudstone layers of the Honghe Member from the middle Cambrian of Shandong, a distinctive trilobite was discovered, named Phantaspis auritus. In adult individuals, the cranidium is markedly extended, with a deeply incised longitudinal depression along the anterior margin, giving it an appearance reminiscent of a pair of outstretched "rabbit ears". This feature is explicitly described in the source material, where the anterior cephalic region develops into a double-lobed structure in later ontogeny.

The anterior region is well developed and projects forward, forming two elevated lateral lobes separated by a median longitudinal furrow, producing a highly unusual outline. The glabella is sub-rectangular, slightly tapering anteriorly, and exhibits a mild constriction at the second pair of glabellar furrows (S2). Five pairs of glabellar furrows are present, clearly defined but not connected to the axial furrow. The compound eyes are elevated, and the eye ridges are robust and extend obliquely backward.

The lateral margins of the cranidium are broad. The librigenae are trapezoidal with straight edges, and their ventral extensions are conspicuously developed, forming a prominent structural component. The thorax consists of thirteen segments, each bearing elongated pleural spines that progressively incline posteriorly, suggesting both defensive capability and flexibility. The pygidium is semicircular, with a slightly narrowing axis and a broad terminal region, displaying three to four pairs of faint segments and pleural furrows. Overall, the morphology is highly unusual and conveys a strong defensive character rarely observed among trilobites.

Etymology

The genus name Phantaspis was established in 2020 by Zhixin Sun, Han Zeng, and Fangchen Zhao. It derives from the Ancient Greek φαντασία (phantasia, meaning "fantasy") and ἀσπίς (aspis, meaning "shield"), collectively meaning "fantasy shield", while also alluding to the album Fantasy by Jay Chou.

The species name auritus originates from the Latin auritus ("eared"), referring to the deeply indented anterior margin of the cranidium that resembles a pair of ears.

Biological description

Phantaspis auritus lived during the Miaolingian Series of the Cambrian (Wuliuan Stage, approximately 509–504 million years ago), inhabiting shallow marine lagoonal environments represented by interbedded mudstone and sandstone in the Longgang section of Linqu, Shandong. These sedimentary conditions indicate a low-energy setting suitable for benthic trilobite activity.

The characteristic "ear-like" anterior projections likely carried multiple ecological functions. They may have enhanced discoidal enrollment, allowing the animal to curl more tightly as a defensive response against predators. Alternatively, this unusual morphology may have functioned in defense or sexual selection.

Ontogenetic sequences from meraspid to holaspid stages indicate that the anterior region progressively elongates during growth, with the deep anterior indentation developing gradually. This pattern demonstrates that the distinctive morphology was not present from early stages but emerged through developmental transformation. Such morphological innovation provides a striking example of ecological diversification and experimental body plans among Cambrian trilobites.
